DAVE SMITH
Artist Statement of Dave Smith
I will forever be inspired by the human form and its infinite differences and will forever feel the need to capture the way I see it, in my mind, with a brush. I get a great source of inspiration from people and the human form as well as the work of other artists and photographers. I have an Uncle who is a sculptor who is a great source of inspiration. Artist’s date back many generations in my family mainly in the Netherlands.
Technique and expertise should have a predominant place in art. The subject, over time, loses its meaning and value. Tomorrow a new subject will overcome yesterday's with a new perception of what is socially sought after. The execution and portrayal of that subject holds its value. Through an expressionist and abstract portrayal of my subjects I paint from the inside out, inhaling my subject and exhaling my rendition of them onto my installations.
My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel, and experience but I have always been drawn to the human form. I evaluate aesthetic and non-aesthetic art subjects with material and medium in a never ending hope of inadvertently creating the new and unseen in an already existent subject.
My use of oil paint as a medium is rooted as deeply in me and the need to express my view of the human form. There are as many differences in how the paint smells, feels, is applied, textured, and looks as there are in two faces.
